An international congregation currently numbering approximately 2,500 members, the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) were established in 1850, and came to California in 1924. Following the congregation’s traditional commitment to education and to those in need, members of the California province:
- Teach and/or administer Catholic elementary and secondary schools; since 1924, the Sisters of Notre Dame have had an impact on 21 Catholic schools in California through character formation, leadership training, academic excellence and spiritual development;
- Teach, support, and/or administer Catholic mission schools in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.
- Teach and/or coordinate parish programs, primarily religious education;
- Serve in health care facilities;
- Assist the disadvantaged through social outreach programs;
- Minister in Rome, Italy.
SND Life and Ministry programs are in communities where meeting the needs of individuals and families who are disadvantaged and vulnerable is a primary concern of the sisters. Currently, the sisters serve in 16 countries in 5 continents touching thousands of lives. Today, as the congregation moves beyond its 150 years, Sisters of Notre Dame continue to bring hope within diverse societies by empowering future generations to realize their personal and professional potential.
The Sisters of Notre Dame of Los Angeles (SND) are financially independent from all dioceses and parishes of the Catholic Church. Although a number of sisters receive a small stipend for their work, additional funding is needed to conduct SND Life and Ministry activities. Since the sisters do not receive an operating subsidy from the Catholic Church, your support of the Sisters of Notre Dame is truly appreciated.
